Barrhaven FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What types of homes are available in Barrhaven?

Mostly detached homes and townhomes, many built from the 1990s onward. There are some older homes in the original part of Barrhaven, and new subdivisions are still being built, especially on the southern and western edges. Stacked townhomes and a few condos round it out.

Should I buy new construction or resale in Barrhaven?

Both are common here. New construction lets you choose finishes and get a warranty, but you'll wait for the build and the neighbourhood may still be under construction around you. Resale homes come with mature trees, finished parks and established streets, and you can move in sooner.

How is the commute from Barrhaven?

Highway 416 gives quick access to the 417 and the rest of the city. The Southwest Transitway runs rapid buses toward downtown, and VIA Rail's Fallowfield station is in Barrhaven for trips to Toronto or Montreal. The Vimy Memorial Bridge connects to Riverside South.

Is Barrhaven good for families?

It's one of Ottawa's most popular family suburbs. There are a lot of schools, parks and trails, the Minto Recreation Complex, and major shopping along Strandherd and at Chapman Mills. Most homes have yards and garages.

How does Barrhaven compare to Riverside South?

Barrhaven and Riverside South are connected by the Vimy Memorial Bridge over the Rideau River. Barrhaven is bigger and more established, with a lot more shopping along Strandherd and at Chapman Mills, the Minto Recreation Complex, VIA Rail's Fallowfield station and direct Highway 416 access. Riverside South is smaller and newer, with homes along the Rideau River and O-Train Line 2 at Limebank station, though it's still building out its shopping. If you want amenities in place now, Barrhaven. If you want newer construction and rail transit, Riverside South.
