Kanata FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What types of homes are available in Kanata?

A wide range. Beaverbrook, the original neighbourhood, has 1960s and 70s homes on mature lots. Areas like Katimavik, Glen Cairn and Bridlewood have homes mostly from the 1970s to 90s. Kanata Lakes, Morgan's Grant and newer subdivisions have larger, more recent homes and townhomes. There are also condos near the Kanata Centrum area.

Is Kanata a good place to live if you work in tech?

It's the obvious choice. The Kanata North tech park along March Road is one of the largest in Canada, and living in Kanata North can turn a long commute into a few minutes' drive or a bike ride.

How is the commute from Kanata to downtown?

Most people drive the 417 or take express buses. There's no O-Train service to Kanata yet. The drive is manageable outside rush hour, but plan for traffic at peak times.

What is there to do in Kanata?

Plenty. The South March Highlands has kilometres of forest trails, the Canadian Tire Centre hosts the Senators and big concerts, and Kanata Theatre runs a full season at the Ron Maslin Playhouse. An indoor water park and hotel was also approved on Palladium Drive in 2026.

How does Kanata compare to Barrhaven?

Kanata and Barrhaven are Ottawa's two big west-end suburbs, and many buyers compare them. Kanata is anchored by the March Road tech park, the Canadian Tire Centre and the South March Highlands forest, and it sits along Highway 417. Barrhaven is further south along Highway 416, with newer subdivisions, big shopping along Strandherd and the Southwest Transitway. If you work in Kanata North, Kanata saves you a lot of driving. If you work in the south end or want the newest subdivisions, Barrhaven is often the pick.
