Ottawa Community Housing has hired a builder to redevelop 214 Somerset Street East in Sandy Hill into 23 supportive studio homes.
The $7.77-million construction contract went to Beaudoin Construction, with work scheduled to begin in spring 2026. The building will have 18 standard studios and five fully accessible units, plus office space for service providers on site and shared rooms for workshops and programs. The goal is to help residents live independently.
Supportive housing combines an affordable home with on-site support services. Projects like this are part of the city’s broader push to add housing across central neighbourhoods, and Sandy Hill, with its mix of houses, apartment buildings and student rentals, has seen a fair amount of that change.
If you live nearby or are thinking about buying on the street, the practical impact is a construction period through 2026 and into 2027, followed by a new small apartment building replacing the old one. For a sense of what’s being built around a specific address, the City’s development applications map is the best place to check.
I’ll post an update when the building opens.
